Topographic Survey

FROM AN ACTUAL GRADE SURVEY: 219 GROUND SHOTS ACROSS 5.2 FEET OF FALL

A topographic survey records the shape of the ground. Every rise, every swale, every inch of fall across the site, measured densely enough that an engineer can design drainage, grading and foundations against real numbers instead of assumptions.

In Florida this matters more than the flat reputation suggests. Five feet of fall across a site is the difference between water leaving a property and water standing on it, and five feet is easy to miss by eye.

What gets recorded

  • A grid of ground shots dense enough to build a working surface and generate contours
  • Drainage: flow lines, inverts, inlets, swales, top and toe of bank
  • Hard surfaces, edge of pavement, curb, sidewalk and driveway aprons
  • Existing structures with floor elevations where they matter
  • Visible utilities and evidence of buried service
  • The boundary, so the terrain and the property lines agree
The drawing above is a real grade survey. Each dot is a ground shot, shaded from the low corner of the site to the high one, and the triangles are drainage inverts. The site carried 5.2 feet of fall across 219 measured points.

Ask your engineer first

Different designs need different detail. A drainage study lives on flow lines and invert elevations. A building pad needs tight spot grades where the structure will sit. A landscape plan may want every specimen tree. Tell us what the survey is feeding and we will collect for that, because a second mobilisation to pick up what was missed costs more than gathering it the first time.

Who usually needs one

Civil engineers, architects, contractors bidding earthwork, developers preparing a submittal, and owners who need to understand a drainage problem before spending money on it.
