Tree Location Survey

FROM AN ACTUAL TREE SURVEY: 432 TREES LOCATED, LARGEST 61 INCH TRUNK

A tree location survey records every protected tree on a parcel: where it stands, what species it is, and how thick the trunk measures at breast height. Most Florida jurisdictions require one before a permit will issue on a wooded site.

The reason is simple. Local tree ordinances protect specimens above a certain diameter, and the review office cannot judge a removal request or a mitigation plan without knowing exactly what is there.

What each tree gets

  • A located position, tied to the boundary so it can be plotted against proposed construction
  • Species identification
  • Diameter at breast height, the measurement ordinances are written around
  • A point number, so the arborist report and the survey refer to the same tree
The drawing above is a real survey. Each circle is one tree, sized by its actual trunk diameter. That parcel held 332 oaks, 98 palms and a 61 inch specimen.

Who usually needs one

Anyone building on a wooded lot, developers preparing a site plan submittal, and owners applying to remove a protected tree. Arborists frequently commission the survey and add their own assessment to it.

Where we do them

Anywhere in Florida. Tree ordinances vary considerably between jurisdictions, so tell us which city or county will review the work and we will format for that office.
